Today we launched Chelly and Simba's first cross-country road trip. We are heading east on I40 to Black Mountain, NC. Our first day will take us to Fort Smith, AK with over 700 miles of bumpy highway retracing Old Route 66 through NM, TX, and OK. Simba curls in his crate resting his head on his monster-bear paws and looking at us with resignation. There are suitcases, bags, and dog food packed around the two dog crates. Chew toys, raggy towels, and puppy snacks litter the small island in the back seat where the two cow dogs curl themselves into red cinnamon rolls. Chelly lowers her eyes plaintively as if to say, "I never asked for a puppy." Ross laments, "We have more crap now than when we traveled around the country with three kids." Life just got a little more fun and a lot more complicated.
