A Perfect Cowdog Summer Day

We wake at 6:30 a.m. to the cool mountain air, blue New Mexico skies. Cowdogs snoring in their beds. A hike along the Sandia Mountain Crest Trail, romping after phantom squirrels and chipmunks. Hopping over fallen tree trunks and boulders. Greeting other hikers beneath the thick canopy of pine and fir trees. We rest together in the shade of the Kiwanis Cabin, eating and overlooking the city of Albuquerque 5,000 feet below us. Finishing the day: a lazy siesta, cowdogs and hikers asleep on the living room floor as a light summer rain trickles against the window panes.

Perfection

Mountain morning, I
walk with you, two speckled dogs,
the crest of the world.
